August Without Cicada Rain: A Summer With My Country Niece

On August 11th, the protagonist (default name: Minato Nagatsuki) returns to his family's countryside home for the first time in seven years, for his late sister's first Obon memorial. Waiting for him is his niece, Kaho, now fully grown, who runs up to greet him with an easy, unguarded smile: "Onii-chan, I've been waiting!" That evening, once the memorial service is over, her father heads up into the mountains for fieldwork, leaving the two of them alone in the old Japanese house.
There's only one guest futon. From the very first night, their life together as just the two of them begins. In an old-fashioned house with no private rooms, the closeness of the living room and the veranda takes some getting used to — and the seven days from August 11th to the 17th unfold slowly, marked by date captions that appear on screen.
Nothing dramatic happens in this story. Getting a free vegetable from Tome-san at the morning market, chasing cicadas together, an afternoon nap on the veranda, splashing around in the Shinose River, a small summer festival at night — the game carefully depicts how these ordinary days gradually become something special.
Kaho's charm also comes through in the nine outfit sets she wears across the seven days — jinbei, a sundress, a swimsuit, a camisole, and a white morning-glory-print yukata worn only on the night of the festival. Every time her outfit changes, something about the distance between them shifts too. Watch for her wearing nothing but the protagonist's white dress shirt — a classic "borrowed boyfriend shirt" look.
He's never called by name — only "Onii-chan." Because she never uses his name, Kaho pours everything she feels into how she says that one word: drawn out when she's being affectionate, with a pause when she means it. Her fully-voiced performance carries every nuance of that.
